High Fuel Prices Bringing More People to Food Pantry

Higher fuel costs have affected some Ashley County residents in ways other than requiring them to pay more at the pump and to pay higher utility bills. Hamburg Helping Hands Food Pantry Director Mary Williams explained recently that while fuel costs have increased, working extra hours to make ends meet is not an option for a percentage of elderly residents collecting social security. During January, according to Williams, the pantry aided 114 families.

"The biggest group served are senior citizens, 70 to 80-years-old. They're the ones struggling most," Williams said, adding that 70 percent of those assisted through the pantry are senior citizens.

"Try living on $600 a month to pay utilities and see how far that takes you," she said. Seniors also face medical issues combined with the increased living expenses.

De Anna Sheffield, Reporter

De Anna Sheffield made Tampa Bay her home in December 2000, days before Christmas. She immediately went to work, reporting on every shift, and filling in on the anchor desk for ten News This Morning and on the weekend evening news.

You're likely to see De Anna reporting live reporting on everything from feature stories, to controversial court cases that have received national attention. And most regularly, she's seen on the four PM show, 'Life Around the Bay'.

De Anna came to WTSP by way of Memphis, Tennessee, where she was an anchor and reporter at WREGTV, for more than three years. But her first job in television was more than ten years ago, at WAPT 16 in Jackson, MS, where she was hired as a part-time reporter while attending Jackson State University.

After graduating Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Mass Communications and Minor in Sociology, she landed her first anchor job at WGBCTV, in Meridian, Mississippi.

Obama extends streak with wins in Hawaii and Wisconsin

Then there's MSNBC's Chris Matthews who tells Felix Gillette in the New York Observer, “I've been following politics since I was about 5. I've never seen anything like this. This is bigger than Kennedy. [Obama] comes along, and he seems to have the answers. This is the New Testament."

And behold, Obama met them and greeted them. And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him.

The Holy Season of Lent is upon us. Can Obama worshippers try to give up their Helter-Skelter cult-ish qualities for a few weeks?

At least until Easter, or the Pennsylvania primary, whichever comes first…

UPDATE: Let me be clear: I'm not saying there shouldn't be enthusiasm in politics. I'm merely touching on the fact that some Obama supporters' exhuberance seems to be getting a little out of hand.

Neal's blog

In light of recent events it seems appropriate to take a look back at some memorable words spoken by a great man in 1963: I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

Butterfly dream becoming true

After several years of searching for cash, the Butterfly World Trust has enough funds to embark on the first of three phases.

The trust hopes the dome, which will be the largest in the world, will become one of Britain's top tourist attractions.

Before an official launch on March 14, the trust is remaining tight-lipped about its sources of cash and the nature of the first phase, which should be complete by summer 2009.

The site is in Chiswell Green Lane, next to the gardens of the National Rose Society which sold land to the butterfly project's backers.

Authorities said the child, Roberts' biological son, died Wednesday afternoon at UW Hospital.

United's future: What would a merged airline look like?

So it must've been baffling for United Airlines Chief Executive Glenn Tilton to see Delta Air Lines CEO Richard Anderson in the spotlight as merger mania finally took hold in earnest last week.

With media and analyst attention focused on Delta's merger ambitions, Tilton on Friday sent a reminder in a companywide message that his hands are on the controls, too, as the industry contemplates a massive shake-up.
